Moscow states British diplomacy knows only ultimatums

(MENAFN) British diplomacy has shifted to relying solely on ultimatums in its international engagements, according to Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin. In an interview with RIA Novosti published Sunday, Kelin said this combative approach, particularly from the UK Foreign Office, has become routine in recent years.

He noted that during his time in London, he has consistently encountered such rhetoric and that even other ambassadors have raised concerns about the confrontational tone adopted by British officials.

This criticism comes after the UK announced another wave of sanctions on Russia on Tuesday, demanding an unconditional ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. Similar demands have been made by France and Germany ahead of last week’s peace talks between Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul.

Kelin accused current UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer of being just as aggressive as his predecessors—Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak—claiming that all have shown “belligerence and irresponsibility” regarding global affairs and have pursued a consistent anti-Russian policy marked by unwavering support for Ukraine.

The Russian ambassador argued that both bilateral relations and broader European security would benefit if the UK adopted a more respectful and open-minded diplomatic tone.

Responding to the new sanctions, the Russian Embassy in London emphasized that pressure tactics, such as threats and ultimatums, will not alter Russia’s course. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed this, saying that Russia rejects the language of ultimatums outright.

Despite facing nearly 29,000 Western sanctions in recent years, Russian officials maintain that the country’s economy has grown more resilient. President Vladimir Putin stated in March that these restrictions have only strengthened Russia’s ability to adapt and endure.
