UK Starmer Heads to Gulf to Reinforce Iran Ceasefire
The visit follows US President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday of a two-week ceasefire with Iran, after Washington deemed Tehran's submitted 10-point framework "workable" — a diplomatic breakthrough that arrived with barely two hours to spare before the expiration of a deadline Trump had repeatedly prolonged, warning Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face what he grimly described as "the destruction of an entire civilization."
According to an official government statement, Starmer will use the high-stakes regional tour to reaffirm London's firm dedication to de-escalation, while holding substantive discussions with Gulf partners on actionable measures to restore unimpeded freedom of navigation through the critically strategic Strait of Hormuz — a waterway through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply flows daily.
Downing Street framed the backdrop of the visit as one of cautious optimism, pointing to what it described as "promising progress" stemming directly from the ceasefire accord.
Starmer will also take time during the trip to personally address British military personnel stationed in the region — an engagement that had been scheduled well before the ceasefire announcement thrust the visit into sharper geopolitical relief.
The Prime Minister made his position unambiguous in an accompanying statement ahead of his departure.
"I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which will bring a moment of relief to the region and the world," Starmer said.
