UK Brings in Former M&S Chief to Tackle Youth Unemployment Crisis

(MENAFN) According to reports, former Marks & Spencer chief executive Marc Bolland has been recruited by the UK government to help address rising youth unemployment following a review that warned of the risk of a "lost generation."

The review, led by former minister Alan Milburn, found that without significant intervention, one in six young people could be outside employment, education, or training within the next five years.

Bolland has been assigned the task of working with business leaders to increase employment and development opportunities for young people. He will also provide guidance to Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden on potential policy responses to the review's findings.

Commenting on his new role, Bolland said: "I believe the government is serious about tackling this generational crisis of youth unemployment, and I know that working hand-in-hand with business to support young people gives them the best possible chance of success."

In the review, Milburn highlighted growing concerns about shrinking opportunities for younger generations, warning: "The problem is that for too many young people, opportunities are not growing, they're shrinking."

The report examined the reasons behind the high number of people aged 16 to 24 who are classified as NEET—meaning they are not in employment, education, or training—and called for stronger action to improve their prospects, according to reports.
