UK PM Denounces Belfast Violence After Attack

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly criticized the violent unrest in Belfast, describing the riots that followed a recent serious incident as “totally unjustified,” while urging calm across Northern Ireland.

Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions in response to a Labour backbencher, he referred to a “horrific attack” in north Belfast earlier in the week and noted that the suspect had already appeared in court and been formally charged.

He also praised emergency responders and members of the public who assisted at the scene, saying their actions demonstrated bravery, and expressed sympathy for the victim involved in the attack.

However, he drew a clear distinction between the initial incident and the subsequent disorder, stating: “But let me be clear, the acts of violence and arson that followed are totally unjustified,”

He added that political leaders are united in calling for calm, supporting law enforcement, and ensuring justice is carried out.

The leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, also condemned the unrest, calling the scenes “deeply, deeply disturbing” and joining calls for stability and restraint in the region.
